Exhibitions

Gillian Brent makes three-dimensional structures that describe space, indicate movement and suggest human interaction. Her practice has changed in emphasis over the last few years, becoming installation based rather than sculpture, utilising a variety of materials for their metaphorical as well as physical qualities.

Gillian's work is a direct response to the place where it is seen, investigating its architecture, environment and how people use the space. She creates installations that react to these different aspects, exploring the notion of cause and effect and interrupting the spatial layout. The resulting works are tectonic anomalies that appear to have a structural or functional purpose but are in fact anti-function. Despite this, they are not apparently decorative; they use the space as an integral part, inhabiting and affecting it. The audience interacts with the installation, moving around within it, reassessing the space and its effect on their intuitive behaviour.
