"There’s no such thing as flat"
2 April - 12 May 2007

This installation brings together various works in vinyl referencing the way the material renders objects flat while defining its own surface. Seemingly arbitrary marks such as dripped liquid are photographed and reproduced.

A small splash writ large onto the front gallery window plays with our understanding and value of an insignificant mark. Its colour implies violence but we are not sure of its original scale or if its colour is from of the original mark or a more recent decision.

The work investigates fluid (paint) and how it flows on a surface (paper). The paint has a thickness and as it flows distorts the paper and can create seemingly abstract shapes. This is never entirely arbitrary as there is always some sort of input from the artist, looking at the value of a clichéd mark against an unexpected one.

The marks are captured (photographed) and digitised (put in the computer) so that they can be used and reused in any number of different ways. Each area of the installation in the gallery looks at a different outcome to the scenario.

The title for the exhibition reflects on computing and its use of real numbers. Real numbers are recorded to the decimal accuracy of the computer and in theory can never be 0, only somewhere near. If something exists it then has to have a value. The vinyl has a thickness of some 80 microns but it is seen in terms of its edge. The edge is where the material stops and everything else begins, its surface is just there.
